The coagulation mechanism of carboxylated latices, heat sensitized by addition of a polyetherpolysiloxane, are investigated. First, the parameters influencing the temperature at which the latex coagulates on heating are determined. From this, a model for the coagulation mechanism of the heat sensitive latices is deduced. The postulated mechanism is based on the formation of a complex by hydrogen bonding between ether groups in the polyether undissociated carboxyl groups at the surface of the latex particles. This complex formation increases with temperature and reduces the steric stability of the latex particles. This reduction in steric stability is demonstrated by direct measurement of the repulsion between the particles as a function of their distance. © 1990.
