EPIDURAL LUMBAR CAVERNOUS HEMANGIOMA: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Cavernous hemangiomas are vascular malformations that occur infrequently in the spine and usually involve the vertebral body. Lumbar epidural cavernomas that are not secondary extension from a vertebral body lesion are very rare and account for only 4 % of all epidural lesions. We present a case of pure spinal cavernous hemangiomas in a 51 year old female with progressive unilateral L3 radiculopathy. The MRI showed an enhanced epidural lesion at the level of L3. A radiological diagnosis of neurinoma was considered. The macroscopic aspect and the pathology confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangiomas. The post operative course was uneventful and the patient improved clinically with a follow up of 12 months.
