THE EFFECT OF SONIC TREATMENT ON THE FLOTABILITY OF OXIDIZED COAL

Microflotation tests using a Hallimond tube were performed to study the effects of sonic treatment on the flotability of oxidized coals. The experiments revealed a significant decrease in coal flotability as a result of oxidation in dry air at 150-degrees-C for 150 h. Sonication of the oxidized coals in aqueous slurry restored the flotability to a level near or exceeding that of fresh coal. Washing oxidized coal without sonication effected only minor improvements in flotabilities.
