ELECTRON-SPIN RESONANCE STUDIES OF RADICALS PRODUCED BY GAMMA-IRRADIATION OF THIOPHENE IN THE CRYSTALLINE AND ADSORBED STATES

ESR studies have been carried out on radicals produced by γ irradiation of single crystals of thiophene and of adsorbed samples of thiophene on silica gel. The ESR spectra observed indicate that the structure and thermal reaction of radicals produced are the same in both matrices. γ irradiation predominantly produces the 2-hydrothienyl radical, formed by H atom addition to thiophene, and a second radical tentatively assigned to the 3-thienyl radical formed by H atom loss from thiophene. Warming above 77 K results in the production of an allylic dimer radical most likely formed by addition of the 3-thienyl radical to thiophene. © 1979 American Chemical Society.
