摘要：

This paper analyzes some characteristics of the concept of the intellectual and the contradictions that this social actor has experienced in his/her insertion into public life. This study was oriented by a sample of the varied literature existing on the theme of intellectuals and their relation to power. Based on the contributions of Gramsci (1977, 1980), Foucault (1992) and Mansilla (2002), two types of intellectuals were identified in the historical framework of the modern world: the generalist or universal intellectual and the specific or specialized intellectual.
