Objective: To see whether parallel changes occur in the total fatty acid composition of erythrocytes and the small intestinal microvillus membrane in response to variations in dietary fat. Methods: Rats were fed on diets which differed markedly in their fatty acid profiles. Fatty acid intake was reflected in the composition of the erythrocyte and the small intestinal microvillus membrane. This suggests that the erythrocyte membrane might be used as a reasonable proxy for the fatty acid composition of the enterocyte membrane in field studies. Conclusions: More changes in the erythrocyte fatty acid content were associated with more marked changes in the enterocyte membrane which may be more sensitive to dietary manipulation.
