摘要
In 1892, new textbooks of medicine with similar titles were published by three prominent physicians: William Osler of Baltimore, Henry Munson Lyman of Chicago, and Richard Channing Moore Page of New York City. Osler wrote in the encyclopedic tradition of earlier 19th century authors. Lyman and Page wrote shorter books in the belief that students were better served by brevity. Osler's text overshadowed the others not only because of its authoritativeness and charm but also because Osler captured the emerging definition of internal medicine as a broad, dynamic, and investigative specialty.
