摘要：

The purpose of this paper in establishing the value of gold in Colombia at the end of the XIXth Century is to show how this cultural and material capital becomes part of a particular historical construction. The symbolic value of gold becomes entangled with the impossibility of translating the meaning of objects of the "other" in terms of a national cultural identity.
