SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPY OF THE LINEAR-CHAIN COMPOUNDS NBSE3, TAS3, AND TASE3

Studies of NbSe3, TaS3, and TaSe3at 77 and 4.2 K with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) resolve the linear chain structure in all three compounds and detect the superimposed charge-density wave (CDW) modulations present in NbSe3and orthorhombic TaS3. Two independent CDWs on separate chains are observed in NbSe3and the STM amplitudes are proportional to the amount of Fermi surface obliteration induced by each CDW. In orthorhombic TaS3coupled CDW modulations are observed on two of the three surface chains and these are 180° out of phase. In TaSe3the two surface chains per unit cell are clearly resolved and the surface Se atoms give a STM deflection proportional to the surface atomic heights. © 1990, American Vacuum Society.
