In today's competitive marketplace, pulp and paper companies must realize high productivity while practising effective cost management. Maintenance must be viewed as a supporting element in this endeavour - not just a necessary ''cost of doing business.'' The effectiveness of the maintenance function largely determines the availability of mill equipment, its performance and efficiency and hence actual mill productivity. Thus, maintenance will necessarily play an increasingly significant role in determining the economic success of North American companies in the worldwide paper industry.
