Luminescence and excitation line narrowing experiments of Ru(i-biq)2+3 and the free i-biq ligand in glassy matrices are compared. The Zeeman effect of the resonantly narrowed luminescence spectrum unequivocally establishes the triplet ligand-centred (3LC) nature of the lowest-excited state in Ru(i-biq)2+3. The results confirm an isotropic g value close to 2, a small zero-field splitting and a slow spin-lattice relaxation with respect to the average lifetime of the three spin sublevels. The homogeneous linewidth of the 3LC transition in Ru (i-biq)2+3 in dimethyl sulfoxide: glycerol 1:1 (v/v) is 260 ±50 MHz at 1.5 K and its temperature dependence is proportional to T1.4±0.2. © 1990.
