摘要
Since the 1970's, somatic techniques, as defined by Thomas Hanna (1995), are increasingly popular with the artistic community, especially in dance. Somatic practices subscribe to mind-body unity and accept both objective and subjective standards of knowledge in the interpretation of experience. Isabelle Ginot discusses the general principles of production and transmission of knowledge in these practices. The article identifies two major discursive strategies within somatic techniques: the use of "endorsements" from important representatives of the scientific community and the use of "narratives", such as case-studies of patients and the teachings of the master. She concludes that the main function of science, as used within somatic techniques, is to foster "belief", which is evoked as a probable factor in the efficacy of these methods.
