THE OXIDATION BEHAVIOR OF GAMMA-TITANIUM ALUMINIDE ALLOYS UNDER THERMAL CYCLING CONDITIONS

The oxidation behavior of a number of ternary and quaternary gamma-TiAl alloys in air has been studied under rapid thermal cycling conditions for periods of hundreds of hours in the temperature range 850-1000-degrees-C. The ability of the gamma-TiAl alloys to form a protective alumina scale on oxidation was found to be much influenced by the presence of low concentrations of other elements, binary combinations of which were often more effective in promoting oxidation-resistance than single element additions. For example, whereas the alloys Ti-48Al-4Cr and Ti-48Al-4Ta formed spalling unprotective TiO2-Al2O3 scales at 850-degrees-C, Ti-48Al-4Nb, Ti-48Al-4W and the quaternary alloys Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb and Ti-48Al-2Mn-2W formed protective Al2O3 scales. The alumina-forming alloys Ti-48Al-16Cr, Ti-48Al-12Nb and Ti-48Al-2Cr-6Ta were very oxidation-resistant even at 900-degrees-C.
