FLASH AND BULK TEMPERATURES OF GEAR TEETH DUE TO FRICTION

摘要
To study the conditions of film breakdown due to overheating of gear teeth due to friction, a numerical method was developed for the computation of the flank temperatures of mating gear teeth. The heat rate on the tooth flank is calculated considering the friction losses. The two-dimensional heat conduction equation is solved using the finite element method with mixed boundary conditions. Heat partition between pinion and gear in mesh is investigated, mean and maximum flank temperatures are computed and results are given in the form of the mean and peak flank temperature as a function of the Biot number and the tooth geometry in a form suitable for design application.
