PERIODIC BUCKLING OF THE LATTICE PLANES IN THE THIN REGIONS OF WEDGE-SHAPED CRYSTALS

摘要
We observe in the transmission electron microscope nearly periodic contrast variations (due to buckling) along thin edges of ion-thinned crystal foils of the superconductors V3Ge0.8Al0.2 and NbTi. We attribute the buckling to a tangential expansive force in thin crystal regions. This is confirmed by contrast calculations based on elasticity theory, where the thin regions are allowed to expand resulting in bending of the crystal planes.
