ORDER-DISORDER TRANSITION OF 2-MONOLAYER FE FILMS ON THE CU(100) SURFACE

Two-monolayer Fe films, epitaxially grown on the Cu(100) surface, form a (2 × 1) superstructure with p2mg symmetry. In order to understand the thermodynamics of the reconstruction we recorded temperature-dependent spot profiles of the (10), (11) and (11/2) spots by a Video-LEED system and high resolution electron energy loss spectra of the (0 0) and (11/2) spots. The peak intensity of the superstructure spots decreases exponentially with increasing temperature while the spot profile broadens. This behavior is probably due to the loss of long range order in the surface. © 1990 Pergamon Press plc.
