The performance of “sensitive” electronic and electrical equipment can be affected by power supply disturbances. Often some type of power line monitoring device is connected to the suspected power supply to capture and quantify the power supply anomalies, their electrical characteristics, and possibly their statistical patterns of occurrence. The basic questions to be answered are whether site monitoring should take place and, if it does, how long must the monitoring period be to provide sufficient information to determine the causes and origins of these disturbances. The results of a statistical study on power supply disturbances monitored at a computer center over a period of two years are presented. The results of the statistical study are discussed in detail and reveal the statistical patterns of occurrence of power supply disturbances at the site and the problematic nature of denning the duration of site monitoring. © 1990 IEEE
