ELECTRON HOPPING IN MAGNETITE

The Mössbauer spectrum of magnetite consists of two superimposed six line hyperfine spectra corresponding to A and B sites. The lines of the B site spectrum are broadened relative to those of the A site spectrum. It is suggested that the broadening is due to an electron exchange between the Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions at the B site. From the measured broadening it is possible to determine the relaxation time of the electron hopping. At room temperature the relaxation time is τ = (1.1±0.2) nsec. The results are compared with electrical conductivity data. © 1969.
