We give an algorithm to compute the group of outer automorphisms of Z/pZ-group rings of p-groups; this can also be used to test whether two p-groups have isomorphic group rings over Z/pZ (our original motivation). We work our way down the powers of the augmentation ideal, using homological methods. Careful attention is given to which calculations can be done with linear methods and which cannot, with computer implementation in mind.
