Some of the attributes of and criteria for establishing reliable assays for the bioanalysis of peptides are discussed, together with descriptions of some of the difficulties encountered in determining the concentrations of biologically active peptides. The use of a method combining the sensitivity and specificity of radioimmunoassay with the extra specificity of high-pressure liquid chromatography is described. This combination overcomes many of the problems such as cross-reactivity of related peptides in such assays, and allows many peptides to be assayed from one sample. © 1990.
