An on-line experimental/analytical method for measuring the kinetics of oxygen isotope exchange between CO2 and saline/hypersaline salt solutions at low (25-50-degrees-C) temperatures has been tested in the system CO2-H2O-Ca2+-Cl-. The rate constants can be expressed by: ln k = -6.39 - 180mT-1 where m = molality (mol kg-1); and T = temperature (K) for CaCl2 solutions from 0 to 4.0 m between 25-degrees and 50-degrees-C. The effect of the shaking frequency on equilibration time is significant at frequencies below 2.0 Hz. Equilibration times are increased because the isotopic exchange is increasingly limited by transport of gas through the liquid. Above 2.0 Hz the rate constants are independent of the shaking frequency. The rate constants do not depend on p(co2) over the range used in this study (300-600 mbar).
