DISCUSSION ON THE FORMATION AND REMOVAL OF NOX IN AMMONIA FLAMES

Processes related to NO formation and removal in an ammonia-oxygen flame are discussed in connection with the role of nitrogen-containing intermediates. A rate constant k7 for the decomposition reaction (N2H + M --> N2 + H + M) is deduced. According to the rate coefficient k1 selected for the NH2 + NO reaction, k7 amounts to either 1.7 x 10(13) exp(-7200 K/T) or 1.5 x 10(14) X exp(-9000 K/T) cm3 mole-1 s-1 in the 1600-2200 K temperature range. The main contribution to NO formation is ascribed to the NH + O2 reaction. Products and rate constants of the NH + NO reaction are determined. The role of excited species can be dismissed for NO production.
