摘要
The sealing mechanism of radial lip seals is considered in a new light. The influence of temperature is described, and the use of the finite element method for studying the seal-shaft contact problem is discussed. Observations of the under-lip contact area using glass-fiber optics are presented. The oil-air interface formed on the air side of the seal and the occurrence of cavitation are considered. An attempt is made to determine the pumping action of radial lip seals for a steady-state situation by calculating the pressure drop over the oil-air interface on the air side of the seal.
