There has lately been an unprecedented explosion of interest at all levels of educational concern in problems of values education; several discussion papers on the topics of social, moral and spiritual education have appeared from official sources and a number of academic institutions throughout the country have hosted major conferences on aspects of values education. From the discussions of these topics which have taken place so far, however, it would appear that there is an urgent need for rather greater analytical clarity with respect to the meaning of some of the most basic terms in question. In particular, very little light has so far been thrown on the precise respects, if any, in which the notion of spiritual education might be distinguished from those of religious and moral education. The following paper is therefore concerned to attempt some basic logical geography in this highly vexed area.
