STRUCTURAL AND DEFECT STUDIES IN SOLID OXIDE ELECTROLYTES

摘要
We report on a study of the stability and defect structure of erbia-stabilized bismuth oxide (ESB) and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Samples of (Bi2O3)0.8(Er2O3)0.2 were annealed at 400-600-degrees-C in air and characterized using X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, ac impedance and fluorescence spectroscopy to ascertain changes in properties and structure. The chemical stability of ESB as a function of oxygen partial pressure in various environments was investigated using ac impedance, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. We also characterized the defect species and energy level transitions in YSZ and ESB using optical spectroscopy.
