The basis for the characterization of interlaminar crack growth in composite materials is discussed. Mode-I interlaminar crack growth in a unidirectional T300/634.DDS carbon-fiber/epoxy composite was studied. A simple model is proposed to estimate the orthotropic correction factor of the stress-intensity factor for the DCB interlaminar fracture mode. It was found that, for composite materials (involving thermoset and thermoplastic composites), the interrelationship between the interlaminar fracture toughness G(Ic) and K(Ic) can be correlated on the basis of linear-elastic-fracture mechanics, although the special interlaminar-fracture mechanisms can disturb the relationship.
