RETRIEVAL ASYMMETRY AND CRITERION PROBLEM IN CUED RECALL

Differences in the distribution of errors associated with the retrieval asymmetry effect reported by R. S. Lockhart (see 43:6) suggest that the effect may be a function of differences in the criterion S sets for overt responding. In order to establish whether such is the case, adjective- and noun-cued recall was compared in a 1-trial, study-test paired-associate task under conditions of forced and free responding. Ss were 64 undergraduates. The asymmetry effect was replicated and found to be independent of the recall condition. A response-conditional signal detection analysis of the forced recall data showed superior discrimination (larger d') for adjective-cued recall.
