Cardiovascular Surgery in Spain during 2003. The Registry of the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery

The Spanish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery Registry for the year 2003 includes data from 56 hospitals. Within this year a total of 29,807 patients were operated on, with an average of 532 operations/center. With extracorporeal circulation, aortocoronary bypass off-pump and congenital cardiac surgery were operated 18,858 patients with an average of 336 cases/hospital. Interventions were 36% coronary surgery, valvular surgery 38.2%, combined surgery (valvular and coronary) 7.4%, congenital heart surgery 9.3 and 9% miscellaneous. The number of valvular surgeries was superior to that coronary procedures (7204 vs 6788) and combinated 1396. Total hospital mortality was 5.2% for the coronary revascularization with extracorporeal circulation and 3.8 in off pump. The average of coronary graft/patient was 2.9 with ECC and 2.2 without ECC. The hospital mortality for revascularization with extracorporeal circulation was 5.6, 6.2, 4.9, 4.1 and 5.9% for one, two, three, four or five or more grafts. The number of valvular prosthesis implanted was 9580 and the 69% of these are mechanical. From the total number of 8598 patients with valvular surgery, 6879 underwent one valve surgery. Aortic valve was operated 4630 (67%) patients with a hospital mortality of 5.5 and 10% if associated with coronary revascularization. Mitral valve surgery was done in 2193 patients and with hospital mortality of 8.3 and 14.9% in cases combined with revascularization. Two valve surgery was done in 1354 patients and 168 patients was three valve surgery and hospital mortality was 9.7 and 14.4% respectively. The number of patients operated on for congenital cardiac defects was 1762 and there were 1274 open heart surgeries and 488 closed. Heart transplant were done in 267 adults patients with hospital mortality of 16.5%. Pacemakers were implanted in 4061 patients and pacemaker generator exchange was done in 1418. Implantation of defibrillator in 364 cases and defibrillator exchange in 194 patients. There were 3307 operations by peripheral vascular surgery. The number of aortic aneurysms operated on during this year was 1071 for all localizations and them 859 80.2% was done with extracorporeal circulation.
