In this paper inelastic material behavior is investigated with a two-dimensional discrete element procedure. To model the process of microfracture in porous sedimentary rock, basic mechanics principles are applied to the microstructural constituents of the rock, simulating the physical behavior and failure of the material. After presenting a qualitative description of sedimentary rock structure and behavior, a detailed microstructural model is presented. Results obtained using the numerical model compare favorably with experimental observations for rock failure under tensile, uniaxial compression, and biaxial compression loading. Overall strength of the rock depends most strongly on intergranular bond material properties, rather than on inherent grain strength. Macroscopic non-linear stress-strain behavior is found to result from cumulative brittle damage on the microstructural level, without the need for conventional continuum plastic strain mechanisms.
