The influence of various endocrine glands on protein synthesis was studied by implanting glands into decapitated Leucophaea females during oöcyte maturation. The haemolymph proteins were separated by disk electrophoresis on acrylamide gels, and six fractions were determined quantitatively. The synthesis of five out of six proteins is stimulated by neuroendocrine factors. These factors have no influence upon the sixth protein which can only be synthesized when corpora allata are present and active. This is a 'female protein'. The synthesis of one protein seems to be inhibited by a hormone of the corpora allata. Thus it is clear that different hormones have specific effects upon different protein synthesis processes and that investigations about the influence of hormones on total protein synthesis can only be of limited scientific value. © 1969.
