Experimental data on the ignition and development of a discharge in transformer oil, which were obtained with the help of optoelectronic and electrooptical techniques, are presented. Analysis of the data on the velocity and energy released in the discharge zone showed that the energy injected is not sufficient for forming a phase transition, but it is sufficient for forming a channel with low degree of ionization in the liquid itself.
