The study suggests that an operative cholangiogram should be obtained in conjunction with every cholecystectomy. Unexpected common duct disease is frequently diagnosed, the incidence of choledochostomy is reduced by one third, and the incidence of retained common duct stones is negligible. The accuracy of operative cholangiography combined with good clinical assessment is far more reliable than clinical assessment alone. © 1969.
