OUTCOME OF PENILE PROSTHESIS IMPLANTATION FOR TREATING ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION: EXPERIENCE WITH 335 CASES

Introduction: The aim of this paper is to present the outcome of 335 penile prosthesis implantation procedures due to organic erectile dysfunction. Materials and Methods: Three hundred and thirty five penile implantation procedures were done in our clinic with the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction between May 1990 and December 2006. Of the prosthesis inserted, 140 were AMS Dynaflex, 153 were AMS Malleable, 15 were Mentor Malleable, 15 were AMS Ambicore, 10 were AMS Ultrex and 2 were Mentor Excell prostheses. The mean follow-up was 71 (3-143) months. Results: The complications after the implantation were infection 2% (n=7), mechanical failure 6% (n=31: 28 Dynaflex, 1 AMS Malleable, 1 Ambicor, 1 Ultrex) and dislocation 1% (n=5, 4 AMS Malleable, 1 Dynaflex). dissatisfaction rate of the patient due to misuse of the pump was 12% (n=20) and decreased to 1% (n=2) after intensive education. Overall complication rate was 13% (n=45). Conclusion: The rates of the complication and dissatisfaction of the patients are acceptable as in the literature. Appropriate patient choice, preoperative preparation and the education of the patient with the correct implant are the most important factors to obtain better results.
