A mathematical simulation of the pultrusion of poly(epsilon-caprolactam)/poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (NY6/ATBN) copolymers has been developed. The equations of continuity and energy balance, coupled with a kinetic expression for the NY6/ATBN system, are solved by using a finite-difference method to study the temperature profile and extent of reaction in a rectangular pultrusion die. An empirical rate expression is proposed to describe the kinetic behavior of NY6/ATBN copolymers by an adiabatic reactor method. A mathematical model is proposed to predict the optimum processing parameters and the maximum thickness of pultrudates. Comparisons of the experimental results and the theoretical data of temperature profile and conversion of pultrudates indicate that the mathematical model is feasible to describe the NY6/A TEN pultrusion process.
