Thin cobalt films (less than five monolayers thick) on Pt(110)(1 x 2) were studied by various techniques: Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, UPS, XPS, and photoemission from adsorbed xenon. Two steps were identified during the growth of these films. The first step would correspond to a partial filling of the valleys by cobalt atoms, the second one to the first monolayer formation. The growth appears to be roughly layer-by-layer. Annealing of these films involves diffusion of cobalt into the bulk and superficial structural changes.
