DISPERSION OF ALUMINA AND SILICA POWDERS IN NONAQUEOUS MEDIA - MIXED-SOLVENT EFFECTS

Colloidal amorphous silica and a-alumina powders were dispersed in organic media (non-aqueous solvents and dispersants) and stabilized by electrostatic, and steric, or electrosteric repulsive forces. The effects of variables such as the physicochemical properties of both solvent media and dispersants, the proportions of mixed solvent media, etc., were studied. The electrostatic contribution to the stabilization was shown to be much greater than expected. The electrostatic, steric, and electrosteric interactions between particles could be tailored by changing the organic-liquid media.
