H-1 NMR examination of 6- or 8-prenylated isoflavones has shown that the location of the prenyl side chain on the A ring can be deduced from the chemical shift of the 5-hydroxyl proton. The effects of B ring substituents and methylation of the 7-hydroxyl group on the 5-hydroxyl signal, and the application of this technique to the identification of two prenylated isoflavones, kanzonols K and L, isolated from Glycyrrhiza uralensis are also discussed.
