ATOMIC DISPLACEMENTS DURING STRUCTURAL RELAXATION IN A METALLIC-GLASS

摘要
Structural relaxation in the metallic glass Pd40Ni40P20 has been studied by x-ray diffraction. For the first time the structural changes occurring in reversible relaxation have been directly observed. The data have been analyzed by a method that distinguishes effects due to processes where the density changes from those where it is conserved. The results show a clear contrast between reversible and irreversible relaxation and also that the nature of atomic displacements in reversible relaxation changes as the temperature is lowered. © 1990 The American Physical Society.
