Measurements of pool boiling heat transfer from single plain tubes with different degrees of surface roughness and different wall materials to various low boiling hydrocarbons at saturation pressures between 0.3 and 39 bar are reported and are compared to corresponding new measurements with similar test equipment at the University of Karlsruhe (FRG). It is shown that the new measurements agree with the data on the relative pressure dependence of the heat transfer coefficient, α, reported in the literature, whereas a stronger mean increase of α with the heat flux q is found than in previous experiments. Further, the results demonstrate that the influence of the heated wall on α is more complex than that considered by correlations at present. © 1990.
