Valence band photoemission spectra obtained during various stages of the reaction of Na with C60 show contributions not only from the two known bulk phases, weakly metallic Na2C60 and insulating Na2C60, but also from the surface layer. The surface has a unique spectrum, with split t1u band, during the early stages of doping. In the presence of excess Na on the surface of Na6C60, charge donation into the t1g band of C60 has been observed.
