摘要
A carbon-coated fiber with 6.2-kgf failure strength and excellent hydrogen resistance is obtained by suppressing strength degradation due to carbon coating. A scanning microscope is newly utilized to estimate the carbon surface roughness and a smooth surface is found to be essential to obtain high strength. Also, a direct-core-monitoring fusion splicing method for carbon-coated fibers is developed. Cleaning discharge conditions are experimentally obtained which make it possible to splice carbon-coated optical fibers with conventional fusion splice equipment.
