A REVISION OF THE TUMULO DE CAMPANA

This article presents a historical and critical review of the archaeological research at the site known as Tumulo de Campana (Campana, Buenos Aires province). This site, studied in 1877 by Zeballos and Pico on the right bank of the Lower Parana River, was one of the first sites systematically excavated in Argentina. A remnant part of the collection of bone artifacts and pottery that were for over a century in the storage rooms of the Museo de La Plata are analyzed. Furthermore, a radiocarbon date available for this important site, which yielded an age of 1600 +/- 20 years BP, is presented. Finally, the meaning of the Tumulo de Campana and its findings to the temporal and spatial distribution of Goya-Malabrigo archaeological entity is analyzed and discussed.
