Waste disposal is one of the most contentious issues affecting society today. Plastics are perceived to be the most problematic component of the waste stream, owing to their non-degradability. Polymer scientists, having worked for years on stabilising polymers, have successfully developed the means for production of degradable plastics. What are these plastics? For what can they be used? Does anyone want them? Do they help in the problems of waste disposal? This paper aims to give an outline of the degradable plastics that are currently, or are soon likely to be, commercially available. The likely uses of these products are highlighted and compared with the established volume-plastics markets. A brief independent view of the environmental issues associated with the use of degradable plastics is also presented.
