摘要：

The article describes three ideas for implementing the data and information and capacity building commitments made at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) as they related to the marine environment. The three selected examples are: Large Marine Ecosystems, the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction, and a coral reef monitoring and training initiative. These ideas are at various stages of development. The examples were chosen to demonstrate interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approaches to sustainable develop ment of the oceans.
