The framework of a field theory for scalar particles in de Sitter space is given. In the de Sitter space of negative curvature -1/R 2 causality can be defined in a similar way as in Minkowski space. In a quantum field theory the assumption of a degenerate vacuum leads to Goldstone particles, which have not mass m=0, but mass m=1/R. The parity of the Goldstone boson is -1, a result which does not follow necessarily in relativistic field theory. © 1969 Società Italiana di Fisica.
