DIELECTRIC ANISOTROPY IN THE SMECTIC PHASES OF LIQUID-CRYSTALS

The dielectric anisotropy DELTA epsilon of two compounds (507 and 508) of the p-pentoxy-benzylidene-alkylaniline series, in their nematic and smectic phases: A and B for 508, A, B and C for 507 were measured. DELTA epsilon increases strongly in the smectic phases. This is interpreted by an increase of the dipole-dipole interaction.
