摘要：

The article presents an itinerary through a series of passages concerning ruins of modernity, selected from works by Alexis de Tocqueville, Henry David Thoreau and Ambrose Bierce. Taking them into consideration, it analysis the emergence of a new type of ruin in the context of nineteenth-century American capitalism. Finally, it puts forth succinct critical thoughts on current forms of representing ruins.
