摘要
Javal’s rule, which states that the total astigmatism ofthe eye—or refractive astigmatism—is equal to 1.25(keratometric astigmatism) – 0.50 × 90, implies a linearrelation between the two entities. Data published byGrosvenor, Quintero, and Perrigin (Am J Optom PhysiolOpt 1988;65:292-7) show that for eyes having no morethan 2.50 D of keratometric astigmatism, the slope ofthe regression line for refractive astigmatism plottedagainst keratometric astigmatism is less than 1.00, rather than the 1.25 required by Javal’s rule. When datacompiled for eyes having greater amounts of kerato-metric astigmatism are plotted in the same manner, theslope of the regression line is greater than 1.00, sug-gesting that the relation between keratometric andrefractive astigmatism may be non-linear. Howeverwhen data for these highly astigmatic eyes are plottedin combination with data published by Grosvenor, Quin-tero, and Perrigin, they are adequately characterizedby a straight-line relation. © 1990 American Academy of Optometry.
