摘要
This article proposes a three-pronged method for studying inference generation in literary text. The three-pronged method coordinates verbal protocols, theories of discourse processing, and behavioral measures. Verbal protocols reveal potential comprehension-generated inferences. Theories of discourse processing generate predictions regarding which categories of inferences are generated during comprehension. Finally, behavioral measures provide rigorous tests to assess whether or not a class of inferences is comprehension generated. We discuss how the three-pronged method can be applied to naturalistic discourse and literature. © 1992.
