THE NOTION OF PHANTASIA IN PHILOPONUS OF ALEXANDRIA'S COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE'S DE ANIMA

This article examines the way in wich John Philoponus appropriates the Aristotelian notion of phantasia in his commentary on Aristotle's De anima. The purpose of this examination is to indicate the articulation between the reception and interpretation by Philopon of the aristotelian notion of phantasia and the conceptual strategies elaborated by the commentator to sustain the incorruptibility and impassibility of the intellect. In this way, we hope to shed some light on the complex trajectory of transmission of this notion and to problematize, although in very general lines, the attempt to establish a significant correspondence between the dispute for the sense of the Aristotelian phantasy in the sixth century (Philoponus and Simplicius) and in the 20th century (Schofield, Nussbaum and Modrak).
